Santa Cruz Guitar Company begins the Gearcheck journey

Every Santa Cruz guitar is, by design, a one-of-one. That is precisely why its record should be too.

Santa Cruz Guitar Company begins the Gearcheck journey
Shaping a neck at the Santa Cruz bench.

We are proud to announce that Santa Cruz Guitar Company is beginning its Gearcheck journey — turning new instruments into collectibles from the moment they leave the bench.

Founded in 1976 in Santa Cruz, California by master luthier Richard Hoover with partners Bruce Ross and William Davis, Santa Cruz Guitar Company has spent five decades refining a singular vision: to create heirloom-quality acoustic guitars that honor the traditions of violin lutherie while continually advancing the craft. Under Hoover's leadership the company has remained a true custom shop — “luthiers, not assemblers” — where a small team of highly experienced makers builds only a few hundred instruments each year. Every guitar is hand-voiced and tuned, often extensively customized in tonewoods, bracing, neck geometry, appointments, and structural details to the exact preferences of its future owner.

That level of individuality is precisely why Santa Cruz instruments make such a compelling case for secured provenance. Each guitar is, by design, a one-of-one. Materials are carefully selected — frequently reclaimed or responsibly harvested — bracing systems are refined through decades of innovation, and the finished instrument carries the accumulated knowledge of a shop whose combined experience spans well over a century. When that unique combination of wood, design choices, maker notes, photographs, and serial information is recorded and locked into a permanent ledger, supported by RFID tagging, the instrument leaves the shop with a digital birth record that cannot quietly be rewritten.

For collectors, players, and future owners, this means the story of the guitar is no longer dependent on paper files, memory, or incomplete dealer notes. The provenance travels with the instrument itself, establishing from day one the kind of documented history that has traditionally taken decades to accumulate.

Santa Cruz Guitar Company's long commitment to building instruments meant to serve generations aligns closely with Gearcheck's purpose: ensuring that truly unique new guitars can begin their lives as collectibles, with clear, verifiable, and lasting records of origin and ownership.

We are honored to support this next chapter in the company's innovative legacy and look forward to helping more of these exceptional instruments carry their full stories forward.

Every record. Every story.
